India's foreign ministry is pursuing with the British High Commission the issue of a UK passport for a baby born to British couple using an Indian surrogate in the country.

Foreign minister Sushma Swaraj said on Twitter, “We have taken this up with British High Commission. We hope to resolve this soon”, referring to Baby Lily, who faces being left in an Indian orphanage if her British passport is not issued imminently.

Britons Chris and Michele Newman arrived in India on a medical visa which expired on September 7, following which they gained a month's extension.
